• BFA in Architecture, UNM, Magna Cum Laude (1975)
• Master of Architecture, Virginia Tech (1980)

A vision of how structures should work and the ability to turn those visions into reality has defined architect Neil Carter’s life for three decades. He builds trust the same way.

Drawn to the ancient fabric of Santa Fe and the pull of New Mexico's tri-ethnic culture, Neil has devoted his energy and talents since 1992 to helping Native American communities develop appropriate and cost-effective facilities.

Carter is a registered Architect and President of Neil Carter Associates, PC. He established the firm in 1980 to provide architectural and planning services to clients in northern New Mexico.

"After several years of commercial architectural practice, I grew weary of the same old repetitive themes. I needed a change," he says of his early career after earning a Master's degree at Virginia Tech.

An acquaintance told Neil the Santa Ana Pueblo was looking for an architect for a small commercial project. He interviewed and got the job. The rest is history.

"One thing led to another and within three years, I was designing or managing the construction of more than $20 million of work a year for a growing clientele of Native American communities in New Mexico," he said.

To date, Neil Carter Associates has participated in the construction of some $400 million worth of successful projects on Native lands. Along the way, he has won the trust of tribal leaders and earned a reputation for professionalism, thoroughness, and fairness. Most importantly, he has developed sensitivity to tribal concerns and the ability to mediate between his client's expectations and the development industry's capacity to meet those expectations.
